Fille Mutoni Lifts the Curtain on the Lonely Side of Stardom

Singer Fille Mutoni has spoken honestly about the darker side of fame and why she believes many celebrities, especially musicians, end up struggling with drug use.

Drawing from her own life, Fille said stardom may look glamorous from the outside, but it can be deeply isolating.

Having battled depression, drug abuse, and gone through rehabilitation, she explained that fame often replaces real connection with constant noise and applause.

But once one steps away from the stage and the spotlight, that noise disappears, leaving behind painful loneliness.

We have millions and millions of followers, but we have zero friends. The people who cheer us on stage are very many, but the one who can call you just to ask how you slept is not there. If it is not your mother or your father, there is no one else. You leave the stage when you do not have someone close you can talk to, be it your family, because it gets to a point when they just see you as a money machine. No one asks you how you are doing or asks to go for coffee just to see how you are doing. We do not have those people.

That loneliness, she added, often pushes artistes to look for comfort, which in many cases turns out to be drugs.

When we step on stage, there are very many people cheering you on, and once you leave the stage, you are the loneliest human ever. So you look for something to hold onto as solace.

Very much focused on protecting her recovery, Fille also revealed that she does not own a smartphone.

She said this choice helps her avoid content that depicts drug use, which she believes could be triggering and capable of leading to relapse.
