Femi Kuti Calls Wizkid and Fela Debate Unnecessary

Femi Kuti, the first son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has downplayed the controversy comparing Wizkid to his late father.

Speaking from Los Angeles in an interview with Arise TV, Femi said he wishes the issue had not surfaced.

He noted that he has good relationships with both his brother Seun Kuti and Wizkid.

The debate began after Wizkid said he is “bigger” than Fela while responding to criticism from Seun over comparisons with the Afrobeat legend.

The Grammy-nominated musician described the situation as a misplaced priority and said artistes should focus on demanding better governance instead of such arguments.

The Fela and Wizkid comparison should not even be an issue. Fela is the musical and artistic template in Nigeria, so he should be placed in a category of his own and respected. I do not want to get involved in matters between Seun and Wizkid because Seun is my brother and Wizkid is like a son to me. I just wish the situation had not come up.

At the moment, Femi Kuti is in Los Angeles to receive Fela Kuti’s posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards ceremony.
