Azawi Talks About Her Decision to Keep Jewellery and Makeup Minimal

You can hardly talk about Ugandan music today without mentioning Azawi.

Despite her rising fame, she has remained true to her style, consistently choosing comfort and authenticity over trends.

In a recent interview with Executive Media, she explained the reasons behind her fashion choices, which many consider “tomboyish.”

I do not wear tight clothes because they make me uncomfortable. That is why I prefer suits and kitengi.

Comfort, she revealed, is her top priority, and she refuses to sacrifice it for the sake of fashion or public expectations.

While she steers clear of the most typical female outfits, Azawi still proudly wears the traditional gomesi.

I am not about to stop wearing gomesi because I want to continue making money from traditional functions. If a client asks me to wear gomesi, I will.

Reflecting on her personal journey, Azawi admitted that she grew up with a tomboy style, which remains a big part of her identity.

When it comes to makeup, she shared that her sensitive skin often reacts badly.

I have very sensitive skin. Not long ago, I used a cream that made my face swell so much that my eyes were barely visible.

As for jewellery, she said she wears only select pieces.

For earrings, I only wear authentic bronze or silver. I am only supposed to wear things that re authentic.

Finally, Azawi appealed to those who might judge her for her tomboy style.

I just ask people to bear with me and accept me as I am.
