A Pass Advises Artistes to Prioritize Emotion Over Complex Lyrics

A Pass appears to be putting his “The Teacher” persona to work once again as he advises his fellow artistes on songwriting.

The Ugandan singer, whose real name is Alexander Bagonza, took to X to urge artistes to keep their music simple rather than trying too hard to sound clever.

Artistes: The day you stop trying to be clever, you will see what will happen to your music.

In the message, A Pass cautioned artistes against overcomplicating their lyrics in an effort to sound intelligent.

He explained that complicated lines can sometimes get in the way of delivering a clear message.

Make your music simple and easy to enjoy, but not too obvious. You will even feel like it’s boring if you are used to writing smart, intricate lyrics. Hard lines sometimes make it hard for you to deliver the message clearly. Just focus on sending a simple and clear message with emotion and go with the flow. #MelodyAndSimplicity

Over the years, A Pass has been one of the most vocal critics of Ugandan music and musicians.

At one point, he said the majority of Ugandan artistes are “mediocre,” arguing that many of them focus more on what they can gain from music rather than what they can contribute to it.

On another occasion, he labeled them “dead people walking,” saying much of their music lacks depth and fails to uplift listeners or offer solutions to their problems.

This time, however, instead of another round of criticism, A Pass appears to be offering the guidance he believes Ugandan artistes need to fix the very issues he has long pointed out.
