A Pass Reveals Why He Invested in His Own Studio

Alexander Bagonza, alias A Pass, is among the few Ugandan musicians who can boast of owning a personal studio.

The singer says the decision came from a practical place, finding a way to manage costs without limiting how he works.

He explained that having his own setup allows him to move between working alone and collaborating, depending on what a project requires.

I am trying to reduce costs, but at the same time it does not stop me from working with other people. Some projects require collaboration, while others I can handle on my own, so it depends on what I am trying to achieve at that moment.

Beyond costs and flexibility, A Pass is also intentional about the kind of equipment he uses.

He sets a high bar for his setup, making sure it is state of the art and better than what others have.

It also helps to have your own equipment that is state of the art. Personally, I cannot have things that are not better than what others have. The way I operate, I make sure what I have is better than what others have.

Having his own studio has also changed how he approaches studio sessions.

Instead of always paying to use someone else’s equipment, he can now host sessions and benefit from the process.

That way, even if someone I want to work with has their own equipment, I can call them and we use mine, which helps reduce costs. It is not pride, it is just me doing my own thing. People always want others to work with their equipment so they benefit from it. I want them to work with mine so that I also benefit.
