Afrobeats on the Rise, But Don Jazzy Warns There Is More to Learn
Don Jazzy has stirred attention online after sharing his take on Afrobeats and where it currently stands.
The famous Nigerian producer believes the genre is still early in its journey, even with all the global wins attached to it.
He explained that the scene is changing fast and many players are still adjusting.
This our beloved Afrobeats is still a baby genre in the grand scheme of things. We are all still learning everyday as the game is ever changing.
According to him, the cost of promoting Nigerian music has climbed so much that the budgets used years ago no longer match the demands of today.
If you told me just 6 years ago that an afrobeats video could cost over 20m Naira I would say ahh that’s way too much o. But behold some of us have shot videos over 100k dollars.
The Mavin Records boss also spoke about personal growth.
He said he is always willing to learn from people who have reached levels he has not yet explored.
To him, paying attention to the experience of others is a smart way to stay ahead in a competitive field.
Some artistes handle massive stages abroad and some business leaders build huge structures from the ground up, and each achievement shows a skill set he believes is worth studying.
If Burna tells me what it takes to do multiple international stadium shows, I will take notes cos I never run am before. If Dangote tells me what it cost to build a refinery in Lagos I will learn from him.
Don Jazzy added that running a label in Nigeria is a serious task that requires real understanding of the business.
He encouraged anyone hoping to start one to rely on guidance from those, including himself, who have already succeeded.
That said, my people if I tell you how to run a successful record label in Nigeria, I will advise you take notes even if na small note cos we no plenty wey don run am.
