“Albums Are the Way to Go” Spice Diana Urges Musicians to Adapt

For years, Ugandan music was dominated by singles.

Albums were almost unheard of, and most artistes preferred to drop one hit after another rather than a full body of work.

But that trend is now changing, and singer Spice Diana believes it is a shift worth embracing.

During an interview with YouTuber Kaiyz, the “Onsanula” star shared her thoughts on why artistes need to take albums seriously if they want to keep up with the rest of the world.

We need to force it because it is everywhere, and it is the way to go. The world is now digital. You force it until you make it. The concept of albums is something we had little grasp of, but our people will get to understand it if we give them albums, push them, and show them that we need albums. In other countries, albums are working, so we cannot just sit back and wait for the country to understand the concept of albums before we start releasing them. It should be now so that they start to understand and digest them slowly by slowly.

Spice Diana explained that while Ugandans are still warming up to the idea of albums, the digital era has created room for new music trends to flourish.

She believes consistency and persistence will help audiences appreciate albums the same way they do in other countries.

The singer also pointed out the massive growth of online music consumption in Uganda and how it is transforming the industry.

Even the numbers are growing. Which musician used to get over 20 million views? It was not the case, but now we have them. My song ‘Siri Regular’ is at 17 million views, and the streams are many. Online, it made me a lot of money. Back then, who was buying music on platforms like Apple Music and Spotify? But now people buy it. When it comes to online music, we are growing, and I am so happy for the growth.

According to Spice Diana, digital platforms have changed how Ugandan artistes connect with their fans and make money.

She says the future of the industry lies in embracing these new systems and giving audiences more complete projects.

With more artistes now dropping albums and experimenting with digital releases, Spice Diana believes Uganda is on the right track to match the global music scene.
