Alibaba Defends Polygamy: Says It Can Promote Harmony and Stability
Veteran Nigerian comedian Alibaba says polygamy can have practical and cultural benefits.
In an interview with media personality Nedu, he explained that having multiple wives can reduce tension in relationships and encourage cooperation.
He pointed to traditional Nigerian communities where additional wives helped maintain harmony and prevent infidelity.
Recalling old practices in Ibadan, Alibaba said some women supported their husbands taking more wives to protect family stability.
He also noted that in certain cases, polygamy arose out of necessity, such as caring for a young widow or her children.
When a man dies, and his wife is still young or has little children, the family may call the brothers and say, which of you can take care of this girl. That is also part of how polygamy evolved.
While controversial, Alibaba said polygamy still holds value in specific social and cultural contexts, noting that critics often have children with multiple partners themselves.
People may argue that it is not right, but many of those same people end up having children with multiple partners.
