Aloysius Matovu Set to Celebrate 46 Years On Stage
Veteran Ugandan actor, writer, and poet Aloysius Matovu Joy has announced plans to celebrate his illustrious career.
For over four decades, Matovu has been a defining presence in Uganda’s theatre scene, inspiring generations of actors and audiences alike.
The idea to celebrate came to him after reflecting on the tradition among artistes to mark their years in the industry.
The theatre legend, who recently survived a nasty boda boda accident, spoke to Daily Soup about why now felt like the right time to honour his journey.
Many artistes and entertainers have come out to celebrate how many years they have been in the entertainment industry. With that, I thought to myself, ‘Do these people know when I started acting?’ I started acting in 1979 when I had just completed Senior Four. Initially, I wanted to celebrate at 45 years because it would have sounded nice, but then I settled for 46. I counted, and indeed it was 46 years. So I decided that I too should celebrate.
The planned event, potentially titled “46 Years of Aloysius Matovu on Stage,” will take place this year.
The curtain rises soon, and fans of Ugandan theatre are already counting down.
