Are Uganda’s Lavish School Proms About to End?

High school proms in Uganda are no longer just end-of-year dances.

They have turned into glitzy, over-the-top events where teens show off designer dresses, tailored suits, and luxury cars.

Some schools are throwing parties that rival wedding receptions, complete with fancy venues, celebrity MCs, expensive food, and professional videos.

But not everyone can keep up.

While elite schools splash out millions of shillings per student, smaller schools struggle to throw even a simple celebration.

The gap is huge, and you can tell a school’s wealth just by scrolling through prom photos.

Now the government is watching. Officials worry these flashy events are too extravagant and could make students focus more on money and style than studies and good character.

There are even hints that extreme proms could be banned.

Educators are split.

Some say rules could make proms fairer and more about fun and achievement.

Others fear students and schools might just take the parties off campus to dodge regulations.

One thing is clear. Ugandan proms have evolved from simple parties into a full-on culture.

Will they stay a flashy big flex, or turn into simple, inclusive celebrations?

Only time will tell as schools and students respond to the government’s watchful eye.
