Asake Reveals How His Mother Inspired His Stage Name
Nigerian Afrobeats star Asake has opened up about the origin of the name that now defines his music career.
The singer, born Ahmed Ololade, revealed that the name “Asake” did not begin as a stage brand.
It started as a nickname during his school years when members of his cultural group often referred to him as “Omo Asake.”
Over time the phrase gradually shortened, and people simply began calling him Asake.
The name stuck with him long enough that when his music career started taking shape, he decided to keep it.
People stopped adding the ‘Omo’ and just left ‘Asake.’ I thought it was cool and decided to go by it. It is very important to me, and I am not going to lose it. It is what has brought me this far, and I continue to keep it that way.
For the singer, the choice carried deeper meaning.
Asake explained that the name belongs to his mother, and adopting it was a way of honoring her.
He also shared that his mother was happy when she realized he had taken her name into his career.
Today the name Asake has grown into a powerful identity within Afrobeats, one that connects his success to his roots and the family story behind it.
