Bad Black Rejects “Thief” Label, Says Court Never Convicted Her of Theft
Bad Black has rejected the long-standing claim that she stole money from her former British fiancé, David Greenhalgh, insisting the court never convicted her of theft.
Speaking on Sanyuka Uncut, the Ugandan socialite said people have wrongly labelled her a thief since her conviction in one of Uganda’s most high-profile financial crime cases.
In 2012, the Anti-Corruption Court convicted Bad Black, whose real name is Shanita Namuyimba, of embezzling Shs11 billion from Daveshan Development Company Ltd, a real estate company she co-owned with Greenhalgh.
The court sentenced her to four years in prison, which she served at Luzira Women’s Prison before completing her sentence in 2016.
Reflecting on the case, Bad Black argued that people often confuse embezzlement with theft, even though they are different offences.
I did not steal any money. Embezzlement is not theft. Embezzlement means I gave you documents, you approved the money, and it went through the bank, through the law. That does not make someone a thief. Thieves are the people who wake up in the morning and snatch phones. Embezzlement and theft are different cases.
She also pointed to her court record to challenge the “thief” label.
