The Minister of Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, has called for increased efforts to combat drug abuse among young people, especially artistes, emphasizing the importance of supporting individuals battling addiction.

Citing the case of musician Jacky Chandiru, Barugahara praised her transformation from a drug user to an ambassador against drug abuse in Uganda.

“She used to take drugs, but now she is the ambassador fighting against drug abuse in the country. I ask Almighty God to help Jacky Chandiru,” Barugahara said during an appearance on Sanyuka TV on Thursday morning.

“She came out and confessed how she had been using drugs. I took her to Mulago Hospital, and after thorough tests, she was found to have no illnesses like HIV/AIDS or cancer. Her main issue was drug addiction. Thankfully, she overcame it,” he added.

Barugahara highlighted the challenges of caring for individuals battling addiction, noting that few people are willing to offer support.

“It is not easy for someone to be cared for like Chandiru because few express concern about such situations. We have lost so many young people to addiction,” he remarked.

The minister also shared his role in helping music promoter Andrew Mukasa, popularly known as Bajjo, overcome alcohol addiction.

He stressed the need for collective efforts in supporting individuals struggling with substance abuse and urged the public to actively participate in rehabilitation initiatives.

Drug and substance abuse remains a growing concern in Uganda, particularly among the youth.

Recent reports indicate a rise in addiction cases, prompting calls for increased public awareness campaigns and improved rehabilitation facilities to address the crisis.
