State Minister for Youth and Children’s Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, has confirmed the improving health of legendary musician Joseph Mayanja, popularly known as Jose Chameleone.
Speaking after visiting the iconic artist at Nakasero Hospital, Barugahara expressed optimism about Chameleone’s recovery and disclosed plans for him to travel to the United States next week for specialized medical care.
“I am delighted to report that Jose Chameleone is recovering well. He will be heading to the United States early next week for further treatment. New music is also on the way for his fans,” Barugahara said.
During the visit, Chameleone reportedly sang a heartfelt song to thank friends and fans for their prayers and unwavering support during his illness.
“Chameleone is not only on the path to recovery but is also working on new music. His resilience and talent continue to inspire us all,” Barugahara added, describing him as a “champion of Uganda.”
The singer, a household name in Uganda and across East Africa, has been battling an undisclosed health condition.
His hospitalization has sparked an outpouring of goodwill messages from fans, fellow musicians, and friends.
While details about his illness remain unclear, reports suggest that Chameleone’s friends, led by fellow musician Sarah Zawedde, are making arrangements to facilitate his treatment abroad.
His health challenges have also reignited discussions on substance abuse following an emotional revelation by his son, Abba Marcus Mayanja.
Abba appealed to fans for support, sharing insights into his father’s struggles.
“This is not a call to justify substance dependence, but a plea for help. We need to come together if we want to keep him in our family,” Abba said, while criticizing promoters for exploiting Chameleone by booking him for performances despite his health struggles.
In recent months, Chameleone’s condition has drawn widespread attention, underscoring the need for accessible specialized healthcare for artists in Uganda.
Meanwhile, Nigerian singer Rudeboy, who recently performed at the Rudeboy Live in Gulu City concert, also paid a visit to Chameleone.
The visit served as a show of solidarity and encouragement for the ailing musician.
