“Beautiful Song, But Not Hip-Hop” — Viboyo Rejects Kapeke’s ‘Kaba’ Rap Wins

The debate over Kapeke’s rap category wins at the Zzina Awards continues to gather momentum.

Adding his voice to the conversation is Viboyo Oweyo of Swangz Avenue.

While on Big Talk, the rapper and producer acknowledged that Kapeke’s song “Kaba” is a strong and well-crafted record.

In his view, its triumph in the Song of the Year category is justifiable.

However, he drew a clear line when it comes to the Best Lugaflow/Rap Artist and Best Lugaflow/Rap Song categories.

According to Viboyo, “Kaba” does not fit the definition of a hip-hop song and should not have won in rap categories meant for dedicated rappers.

Kapeke’s song ‘Tema Ensingo’ is not a hip-hop song. It is a beautiful song and could have been Song of the Year, but not Hip-Hop Song of the Year, because we have rappers.

His remarks add fresh weight to the growing conversation within Uganda’s hip-hop circles, where several artistes feel genre boundaries must be respected.
