Bentrom Fires Back at Lanek’s “Non-Gospel” Remark on His Dancehall Sound
Bentrom has responded to comments made by gospel singer Afande Lanek, saying that while he holds no personal grudge, he disagrees with the criticism directed at his music.
According to the gospel dancehall artiste, Lanek publicly dismissed his work as “non-gospel.”
He described the remark as unfair and damaging to his career, especially given Lanek’s influence and following within the gospel community.
“What really hurt me is him downplaying my work,” he said in a media interview, adding, “He does not invest even a single shilling in my music, so he has no audacity to speak about it.”
Bentrom went on to emphasize that it is the message in a song, not its sound or style, that makes it gospel.
He also urged unity in the gospel industry, calling on senior figures like Lanek to uplift rather than discourage up-and-coming artistes.
Despite the call for solidarity, Bentrom revealed that although Lanek refers to himself as the “president of gospel artistes in Uganda,” he has never met him and does not consider him a friend.
