Brian Avie Praises Joshua Baraka, Urges Musicians To Stop Chasing Trends
During a recent media chat, musician Brian Avie cut straight to the heart of the problem facing Ugandan artistes: too many are simply catering to what fans want, instead of steering their audience with fresh, innovative sounds.
According to Avie, this “follow-the-crowd” mentality is holding back Ugandan music, leaving it stuck in a repetitive loop instead of evolving and thriving.
He argues that when artistes constantly chase trends, their music loses staying power, becoming easily forgettable.
Worse, it adds unnecessary pressure on musicians to churn out songs at lightning speed, often with little to show for it financially. It’s a recipe for burnout, not long-term success.
But Avie sees a silver lining in Joshua Baraka, whom he praised for breaking through international borders.
He said Baraka’s success is a bright spot, proving that Ugandan music has the potential to soar when creativity takes the lead.
Avie also called for more diversity in musical styles, encouraging artistes to draw from Uganda’s rich regional heritage.
He believes it’s this blend of styles and creativity that will help Ugandan music stand out on the global stage, rather than just mimicking what’s trending.
