Burna Boy Opens Up: “They Tried to Break Me, But I Became a Fire They Can’t Kill”
The Grammy-winning star, Burna Boy, has shared more about the struggles he faced before becoming a global music sensation.
In a recent episode of the Afropolitan Podcast, top Nigerian music boss Obi Asika, who is also the Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, revealed that Burna Boy was once blocked from even performing for free.
He said some people in the industry did not give Burna a chance because he was from Port Harcourt, not Lagos.
“They were blocking him,” Obi said, adding “But Burna found his way and now he cannot be blocked anymore.”
But Burna Boy, known for his boldness, says the truth goes even deeper.
Responding to Asika’s comments, he said what people know is not even half of what really happened.
“They did everything to break me,” Burna said. “They are still trying, but all they did was light a fire in me that will burn them forever.”
The superstar has long said that people in the Nigerian music world tried to block his rise.
From being blacklisted to being ignored, Burna says many in the industry did not want him to shine.
This could be one reason why he often keeps his distance from Nigeria’s music scene.
Even with all the hate and closed doors, Burna Boy kept pushing. And today, the same people who once blocked him can only watch as he takes over the world stage.
