Busiro East Braces for Fierce Race as Ssegona Declares Independent Bid
Despite losing the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket for Busiro East to singer-turned-politician Mathias Walukaga, incumbent Hon. Medard Lubega Sseggona is not bowing out of the race.
Ssegona has announced he will run as an independent candidate, citing the call from his constituents for his continued representation.
I have heard your request, my voters of Busiro East Constituency. I have served my party with dedication, but due to the trust and demand you have placed in me, I will be contesting as an independent candidate.
He added that there is no bad blood with the party president despite not having spoken to him recently.
I have no clash with the party president, and I have not yet heard from him of late.
Ssegona also addressed an invitation from Presidential candidate Mubarak Munyagwa of the Common Man’s Party, saying he has no issue with him personally but rejecting the offer.
I hold no bad feelings towards Hon. Munyagwa, who has been my friend and still remains so. However, despite his call for me to join his party, I will not. They may eat rice on a platter, but I prefer to enjoy my matooke.
He concluded by questioning NUP’s choice of Walukaga over him, stressing his own stronger qualifications to represent Busiro East.
It is true I was not given the party card, and instead it was offered to Walukaga Mathias someone I strongly believe does not qualify compared to me.
Ssegona’s move adds a new twist to the race for Busiro East and sets up a potentially fierce contest in the 2026 elections.
