Mayiga on Ugandan Music: “I Can Tell When a Song Will Do Well”
Buganda Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga says he is keeping up with trending music, even though his preference has always leaned toward older songs.
While speaking in an interview with Ruth Kalibbala Bwanika, Mayiga explained that he listens to current hits but does not automatically enjoy everything that is popular.
I am currently into trending music despite my love for old music. I like artistes like Vinka. I know Kapeke’s song ‘Tema Ensingo’ is popular with young people, but it just is not for me.
He then named some of the artistes whose music he personally enjoys, showing that his choices are based on what appeals to him rather than what is simply trending.
I love Vinka’s music, Spice Diana, Sheebah Karungi, Winnie Nwagi, Mesach Semakula, Pallaso, and so many others.

Mayiga also said he judges music early, explaining that he can tell whether a song will do well from the moment he hears it.
When a song is good, I can always tell when it is still new. If it makes me happy, I can always tell it will do well.
Using specific examples, he pointed to songs and collaborations that stood out to him.
For example, Spice Diana’s “Stock Mpya” and “Nze Alina.” Last year, Cindy and Omega 256’s collaboration was the best. I have always loved music so I am updated.
His remarks show that while he follows current music closely, his taste remains guided by what he enjoys rather than what is widely popular.
