Cindy Responds to Stage Fashion Critics: “I Want to Be Relatable”

Cindy Sanyu is putting critics in their place over claims that she does not dress her backup dancers well or uniquely.

Some social media users have argued that the outfits are so ordinary that anyone could wear them.

During a sit-down with Executive Media, the self-styled “King Herself” explained her approach to styling for performances.

I see that as a good thing. I like being relatable, so that when someone sees me, they can see themselves. I want whatever we are doing or wearing to feel accessible. I do not want people to think that what I do is something they cannot do. They see me wearing something, and they should feel that they too can get it and wear it.

Cindy also addressed the flood of online criticism.

I see it, but the people who criticize are always the minority. Out of 100 comments, only about three are negative. I do not focus on them. I pay attention to the majority and ignore the minority.

She reminded fans that while everyone’s opinion matters, pleasing everyone is impossible.

You have to filter the opinions and go with what the majority wants.

When asked if she would consider adjusting her wardrobe to honor some fan suggestions, Cindy kept an open mind.

I will try, how I see fit. But my vision is very different from how others see it. I want to inspire. I want someone to look at me and feel like they can make it too. Seeing me dressed like them, looking like them, is one way to make them feel that way. That is what I want. If my outfit is not relatable, the ones my dancers wear will be, and vice versa.
