Comedian Chiko Claps for UCC’s Decision To Ban Vulgar Music
In recent weeks, the issue of vulgarity in music has sparked heated debates, particularly after musicians Gravity Omutujju and Lil Pazo were summoned by the Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC) over some of their controversial songs.
The debate gained further attention when the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, voiced his concerns.
Soon after, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) joined the conversation, banning the songs in question and introducing strict guidelines aimed at curbing the rising trend of vulgar and inappropriate content in the music industry.
Comedian Chiko, of the famous comedy duo Madrat and Chiko, also weighed in on the issue, sharing his perspectives and thoughts during a recent media interview.
He started by thanking UCC for banning songs with offensive and vulgar content.
Speaking from a parent’s perspective, Chiko emphasized the importance of protecting children from such harmful content.
He explained that while some people may enjoy these songs, the use of vulgar words, especially those referring to private parts, is unacceptable.
Chiko also highlighted that words with innocent meanings in other languages can have offensive connotations in Luganda, making their use inappropriate, especially in songs sung in Luganda.
In conclusion, Chiko voiced his support for UCC’s decision to ban vulgar content, but argued that the musicians involved should not be entirely banned from performing, as this is their livelihood.
