Denzel Washington Says He Does Not Care About Oscars

Denzel Washington may have two Academy Awards and ten career nominations, but the Hollywood legend says he is not concerned about trophies.

In a recent interview with costar Jeffrey Wright while promoting their upcoming Spike Lee film Highest 2 Lowest, Washington said awards are not his motivation.

The 70-year-old actor explained that he has been in the business for a long time and has both won when he felt he should not have, and lost when he felt he should have won.

For him, recognition from people matters less than the reward he believes comes from God.

Washington’s two Oscar wins include Best Supporting Actor for Glory in 1990 and Best Actor for Training Day in 2002.

His Training Day win made history, as he became the first Black actor to win in both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories.

That year was also a landmark moment for representation, with Halle Berry winning Best Actress for Monster’s Ball at the same ceremony.

The actor says people often ask him where he keeps his Oscars, and he simply replies that they sit next to each other.

He joked that on his last day, the awards will not matter.

Despite his lack of interest in chasing trophies, Washington remains one of the most respected and influential figures in the film industry.

His career also includes a Best Picture nomination for producing Fences and a recent Best Actor nomination for The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2021.
