DJ Alisha Reflects on Her Break from the Nightlife Scene

Ugandan-based Rwandan DJ Alisha has explained why she recently stepped back from her DJ career.

Speaking on the Ugandan Boy Talk Show, she said the break was a way to focus on herself and regain balance.

Alisha described how the nightlife and entertainment scene can be overwhelming, especially for young DJs and artistes.

The long nights, large crowds, and constant energy demands left her feeling drained.

Truly, the reason why I took a break was to refocus on myself. Night life, okay, let me say the entertainment scene is not for the faint hearted, by the way, to all of you guys who want to be DJs and artistes. So, I think sometimes it is very easy to get lost in the business of it all. You know, the crazy nights, the crazy crowds, the whole ambience of it all, and I feel like I was so drained.

She added that stepping away was necessary to reconnect with herself and remember why she started in the first place.

I just needed to take a step back to reconnect with myself because it started feeling like I was doing everything on autopilot and I needed to figure out my why again. I know to some people it might feel like, ‘Oh no! You cannot take a step back because people are going to miss you or this, this, that,’ but I feel like sometimes you have to do what is best for you even when nobody understands why you are doing what you are doing. So for me, I took a step back to realign with myself and reconnect with myself.

When asked if she feared losing momentum, Alisha said she was confident in her decision, although doubts naturally appeared.

Honestly, I knew exactly that that is exactly what I needed to do for myself at that moment. Did I have doubts after a few months? Of course I did, just like any other person, because this was my life. This was the way I lived for a couple of years. So stepping back and now living differently or doing things differently, it could sting because everyone has already identified into that space and now it’s like, ‘What is she doing? What happened?’ And you know how social media is, everyone has an opinion.

She explained that knowing her reasons made the break worthwhile.

But to me, I knew why I was doing what I was doing and it seemed like a very fair price to pay.
