DJ Selecta Jef Pleads with Artistes: “Stop Cursing in Luganda”
Selecta Jef has spoken out against vulgar music, urging local artistes to rethink their lyrics.
The Ugandan DJ and media personality took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote:
Dear Artistes, If you are going to be vulgar/explicit in your lyrics… at least do it in English. Please stop cursing us in Luganda. The words sound way heavier when said in local languages. We have kids (a whole generation) to raise.”
Jef’s message highlights concerns about how explicit content in local languages affects children and young audiences.
He emphasized the responsibility artistes have in shaping the next generation through their music.
His comments come amid the Uganda Communications Commission’s (UCC) recent ban on songs deemed vulgar, including “Enkudi,” “Dooze,” and “Okwepiicha,” among others.
While the UCC focused on offensive language and sexual innuendos, Jef singled out the impact of using Luganda in such lyrics.
Some X users have praised Jef for speaking up, calling him a voice of reason in the music industry.
