“Do Not Run as Independents, Stand Behind Me” — Walukaga Urges Snubbed Hopefuls
Singer-turned-politician Mathias Walukaga is still riding high after clinching the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket for Busiro East.
The hotly contested ticket had been held by Busiro East legislator Medard Lubega Ssegona, but in a surprising turn the party handed it to Walukaga, leaving many in political circles stunned.
Speaking to Daily Soup, Walukaga made it clear that his victory was no accident but a matter of divine choice.
My brothers who were competing with me for the Busiro East MP NUP ticket are all educated, bright, and qualified, but God decided. In a crowd of people, God always picks one.
Walukaga wasted no time calling for solidarity.
He urged those who lost the ticket to put the party above self and stand united behind him.
I have always said that if I lost the card, I would stand behind the flag bearer. So I also appeal to those who lost the card to stand behind me, the flag bearer, for the betterment of our National Unity Platform.
But unity could soon be tested.
Ssegona has hinted at running as an independent, a move that could fracture NUP support in Busiro East.
In response, the Kadongo Kamu star was quick to caution him and others against tearing the party apart and breaking their pledge of loyalty.
They should not come as independents if we are to take our party forward. We went through vetting, then went on the ground, and we all agreed that whoever did not get the card would support the one who got it.
