Don Jazzy Opens Up About Nearly Quitting Music
Don Jazzy has opened up about a moment in his career when he almost walked away from music.
The Nigerian music mogul said he thought about quitting after his record label with D’banj, Mo’Hits, ended in 2012.
The split left him unsure of his next steps. He even thought about moving abroad to start over, feeling that his music journey might be over.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Don Jazzy explained that it was the encouragement of close friends that changed everything. Their support pushed him to stay, rebuild, and eventually launch Mavin Records.
Looking back, Don Jazzy says the experience made him stronger. He learned to face challenges head-on and never let setbacks break him.
When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I have learned not to let anything break me.
Mavin Records quickly became home to both former Mo’Hits stars such as Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince, as well as new talents including Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, and Di’Ja.
Today, the label has grown into one of Africa’s leading music powerhouses, with artists like Rema, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Crayon, Magixx, Boy Spyce, Bayanni, Johnny Drille, and DJ Big N.
In 2024, Universal Music Group made a major investment in Mavin Global, helping the label expand its reach even further.
