Double Trouble: MUK and MUBS Clash with Same Freshers Ball Date

For the first time in years, two of Uganda’s biggest universities will hold their Freshers’ Balls on the same day.

Makerere University (MUK) and Makerere University Business School (MUBS) have both set October 10th for their events. This rare clash has sparked excitement and heated debates across campuses.

Freshers’ Balls are more than just parties. They are cultural milestones where first-year students are welcomed with music, fashion, competitions, and celebrations.

These events often attract crowds from other universities, turning them into major inter-campus festivals.

Normally, such events are spaced out to allow students to attend both. This year’s overlap makes it a first in Freshers’ Ball history.

The competition is about more than just the date. It is a battle of vibes, production, artistes, DJs, MCs, and campus pride.

MUBS is known for pulling trendy urban artistes and delivering high-energy performances. Makerere often books big-name acts with large fanbases. Both will be fighting to land the hottest headliner.

Production will be another deciding factor. Stage setup, lighting, sound, VIP arrangements, and branding will all matter.

MUBS is expected to deliver flashy club-style productions, while Makerere may lean on its prestige for a grand festival feel.

The Mr. & Miss Fresher and Chief Fresher competitions will add extra drama. MUBS events are famous for bold fashion and glitz, while Makerere’s contests often feature elegance, drama, and campus politics. This year, the results will spark comparisons beyond the campuses.

Leadership will influence the outcome. Makerere’s 91st Guild President, Ssentamu Churchill James, is known for bold activism and strong mobilisation. MUBS’ 28th Guild President, Nabwire Rose, is respected for her inclusive leadership and ability to rally students. Their leadership styles will shape turnout and energy at the events.

Students from nearby universities such as Kyambogo, KIU, YMCA, Cavendish, and UCU often attend both Freshers’ Balls. This year they must choose. Hostels, transport crews, and social media are already filled with debates over which party to attend.

Will the crowd split or will one campus dominate?

NBS Plus will be live at both events, capturing fashion, performances, crowd energy, celebrity appearances, and the overall vibe.

Social media will follow closely, with highlights shared in real time.

Will MUBS bring the urban fire or will Makerere prove it is the giant of giants? The answer will be written on the night.
