Douglas Lwanga Calls for an End to Kenzo, Baraka Comparisons

Fans have been going back and forth over who has made a bigger mark internationally: Eddy Kenzo or Joshua Baraka.

The debate has split opinions, with some backing Kenzo’s long-standing achievements, while others point to Baraka’s recent global run as a sign of a shift.

But for Douglas Lwanga, the conversation is missing the point.

Taking to X, the popular media personality questioned why celebrating one artiste has to come at the expense of another.

Is it possible to celebrate an artiste you love without tearing down another artiste’s achievements or diminishing their contribution to the art?

He pointed out that success in music does not happen in isolation, with each generation building on what came before it.

Lwanga also referenced how international acts continue to acknowledge their roots, adding that Ugandan artistes have grown step by step on the global stage.

Every generation builds on the foundation laid by those before them. Why does Afrobeats Burna Boy still celebrate Fela Kuti? Radio & Weasel showed us it was possible to earn a BET nomination. Eddy Kenzo broke barriers by bringing home a BET Award, and later a Grammy nomination and win. Joshua Baraka has gone even further commercially and continues to thrive performing on global stages.

Instead of turning the moment into a competition, he urged fans to look at the bigger picture.

Guess what, we are all winning as Uganda. Uganda needs more global stars, more music exports, and a stronger presence on the world stage. Yet instead of lifting up the few who are breaking through, we are pulling them down. We are burning our own house, Tekigatta!

For Douglas Lwanga, the focus should not be who is ahead, but how far Ugandan music has come and where it is heading.
