East Africa Absent From BET Awards 2026 Nominees List Despite Global Growth

For many music fans across East Africa, the release of the BET Awards 2026 nominations brought more disappointment than celebration.

Despite another strong year for African music globally, the region failed to secure even one nomination at the awards.

All African nominees came from West and Southern Africa, continuing a pattern that has dominated major international music awards for years.

Tems led the continent with 3 nominations, while Tyla followed closely with 2. Nigerian stars Wizkid, Asake, and Burna Boy also earned recognition.

The omission has already sparked fresh debate online about East Africa’s visibility on the global stage, especially as artistes from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania continue to build international audiences.

While the region’s music industry keeps growing, the nominations show that breaking into the biggest global award conversations remains a challenge.
