From Confusion to Collaboration: Davido and Omah Lay’s “With You” Story

Afrobeats heavyweights Davido and Omah Lay are proving that music can fix misunderstandings.

The duo teamed up on the hit track “With You” after Omah Lay admitted he once thought Davido did not like him.

The story goes back to last year when Davido played Omah Lay’s songs during a livestream with American streamer Kai Cenat in Lagos.

That moment caught Omah Lay by surprise, prompting him to tweet that he had assumed Davido “hated” him.

Davido saw the tweet and reached out to set the record straight.

The two exchanged messages, shared numbers, and started collaborating.

After recording four songs, they settled on “With You” as the standout track.

The track has become one of the highlights of Davido’s fifth album, 5ive.

Fans are celebrating the collaboration, which has now earned a Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance at the 2026 awards.

How Omah Lay and I got together was, Kai Cenat came to Nigeria and I was driving him to the club and then Omah Lay’s song comes up, and he was like, ‘Who is this?’ I responded, ‘Oh! This is Omah Lay, he is hot.’ And then the next day, Omah Lay tweeted like, ‘Wow! Davido gave me a shoutout on a livestream, I thought he hated me.’ And I Dmed him, ‘Why would you think I hate you? We have never met. We eventually, exchanged numbers and we were going back-and-forth with music. We did about four songs and he chose ‘With You’ as the one we would release.
