Gen. Muhoozi Says Men Who Kneel to Propose Should Be Arrested
Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sparked debate after saying men who kneel while proposing marriage should be arrested.
The comments, which spread widely on social media, came after he described the popular proposal gesture as “un African.”
According to him, kneeling to propose is a practice borrowed from Western cultures and does not reflect traditional African customs.
In many Western countries, kneeling during a proposal is seen as a romantic act that symbolizes love and commitment.
However, Gen. Muhoozi argued that African marriage traditions are usually based on family involvement, negotiations, and formal introductions rather than dramatic public gestures.
His remarks quickly divided opinion online.
Some people supported his view, saying African cultures should protect their traditions instead of adopting foreign practices.
Others disagreed, arguing that people should be free to express love in their own way.
The comments have since fueled a wider conversation about culture, modern relationships, and how traditions continue to evolve in today’s world.
