Govt to Repatriate First Group of Ugandan Nationals from South Africa

The Government of Uganda will on July 2 begin the voluntary repatriation of Ugandan nationals from South Africa, with the first group of 265 citizens expected to arrive at Entebbe International Airport at 6:30 pm aboard a special Uganda Airlines charter flight.

The flight marks the first phase of a government-led exercise launched after President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni directed that the Government of Uganda fully cover the cost of bringing home Ugandans who wish to return.

According to the Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Fred Byamukama, more than 700 Ugandans have so far registered for the repatriation programme, with additional charter flights expected to bring home the remaining returnees.

Byamukama commended the government agencies involved in the operation, Uganda’s High Commission in Pretoria, Uganda Airlines, and Ugandan community leaders in South Africa for coordinating the exercise and supporting the return process.

He also welcomed the returning Ugandans, saying the government remains committed to protecting the safety and well-being of its citizens wherever they are.
