Grammy Honour for Fela Kuti Wins Praise from Lagos State
The legacy of Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti has hit a new global high, and Lagos is marking the moment.
The Lagos State Government praised the Kuti family after Fela received a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award on January 31, 2026, in Los Angeles.
His children Femi Kuti, Yeni, Kunle, and Shalewa Kuti accepted the honour on his behalf.
Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture Toke Benson Awoyinka called it a historic moment, saying the recognition reflects Fela’s global impact and is a source of pride for Lagos, Nigeria, and Africa.
Fela’s music challenged military rule, corruption, and injustice while taking African sound to the world.
Decades after his passing, his influence remains strong across generations of artistes.
The Kuti family described the award as deeply meaningful, while the Lagos government reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Fela’s legacy and supporting the creative sector he helped shape.
