Gravity Omutujju Threatened with Lawsuit by Late Paul Kafeero’s Family Over ‘Walumbe Zaaya Remix’

Rapper Gravity Omutujju, born Gereson Wabuyu, could soon be embroiled in a legal dispute with the administrators of the late Paul Kafeero’s estate.

The family, through their legal representatives, has issued a demand notice accusing him of copyright infringement and has threatened to sue.

The dispute revolves around Walumbe Zaaya, a song originally composed and performed by Kafeero in 1991.

According to the notice dated February 11, 2025, Gravity Omutujju, along with Pitaxon, Rinex Music Producers, Kim XP Season 3, and Big Talent Entertainment, remixed and released Walumbe Zaaya Rmx in 2012 without authorization.

The family claims the remix, which is available on YouTube and other platforms, incorporates elements of the original song, including its lyrics, beats, and even Kafeero’s voice.

They argue this is a serious violation of copyright and neighboring rights, accusing Gravity Omutujju and his team of unauthorized reproduction, adaptation, and commercial exploitation of Kafeero’s intellectual property.

In their demand, the family has ordered Gravity Omutujju to immediately stop performing and distributing the remix in any form.

They also want the song removed from all platforms and a full accounting of all earnings generated from it.

Additionally, they are seeking UGX 2 billion in damages for the unauthorized use of Kafeero’s work over the years.

The notice warns that failure to comply within five days will result in legal action, at Gravity Omutujju’s expense and embarrassment.

This legal battle emerges at a time when discussions on copyright law reforms are gaining momentum in Uganda’s entertainment industry.

With many entertainers pushing for stronger protections, all eyes are now on Gravity Omutujju to see how he responds to the notice.
