Hajjat Kulthum Goes Public with Separation from Acram Gumisiriza

Hajjat Kulthum Nabunya has officially announced her decision to part ways with her husband Acram Gumisiriza, marking the end of their two-year union.

The announcement came through an emotionally charged message shared on her Facebook page, in which she addressed religious, cultural, and political leaders, as well as friends, family, and the broader public.

Having met in 2021, the couple officially married in 2022, less than two years after the death of Kulthum’s first husband, Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata.

At the time, Kulthum explained that she was seeking emotional support and companionship during a period of intense grief.

However, as she now reveals, the relationship faced challenges almost from the beginning.

“I started seeing red flags from the very start,” she wrote.

“After much reflection, deep soul searching, and countless attempts to mend what’s been broken between us, I have come to the difficult decision to end our marriage.”

Kulthum emphasized that her decision was not made lightly, as it is the result of months, perhaps years, of emotional disconnection.

“The love we once shared, the connection we used to nurture, now feels like something we’re only trying to hold together out of habit, history, or fear,” she admitted.

“I no longer feel seen, heard, or supported in the ways that matter most.”

Importantly, she was careful not to cast blame, noting that her partner may have experienced similar feelings of distance and disconnect.

Instead, she framed the decision as a necessary, though painful, step toward healing and honesty for both parties.

The message also carried strong spiritual hints, with Kulthum affirming that she approached the decision with deep religious consideration.

“Marriage was not only a personal commitment but also a sacred one, and ending it is not something I take lightly,” she stated.

“I have prayed, reflected, and sought peace in my heart before coming to this conclusion.”

Kulthum expressed her desire for the divorce process to proceed with dignity and mutual respect, disclosing that Sheikh Abdul Rahaman Serunjoji and her family will oversee the religious and legal aspects of the separation.

“This letter is not meant to hurt you. It is meant to finally be honest with both of us,” she wrote, addressing her estranged husband directly.

“I wish you peace, healing, and happiness in whatever your future holds.”

She concluded the message by acknowledging the people who have supported her journey, from the Ugandan Muslim community to the diaspora, formally announcing that the marriage had come to an end “with immediate effect.”
