Hellen Menta Names Uganda’s Biggest Accidental Internet Stars

Media personality Hellen Menta has highlighted some of Uganda’s most famous accidental stars, pointing to the many ordinary people whose lives completely changed after unexpected viral moments online.

Speaking about the power of social media, Hellen reflected on how a single phrase, dance move, or random video clip has repeatedly turned unknown Ugandans into nationwide sensations almost overnight.

One of the first examples she mentioned was the young boy who became famous after mentioning “Kabaka Mwanga” in a viral clip that quickly spread online and attracted attention from celebrities and influencers.

According to Hellen, the youngster later met JB and his wife before pastor Aloysius Bujjingo reportedly asked him what gift he wanted. Instead of making huge demands, the boy only asked for an iPhone and a laptop.

She also highlighted MC Africa, whose fame exploded after a video showed him dancing on a chair to “Twende Tu Party,” quickly pushing him into online fame.

Another name on the list was Muzeyi Jemba, whose famous phrases “That is a miracle” and “I can’t accept that” quickly became part of Uganda’s online culture, especially in meme reactions and trending posts.

Hellen also revisited the rise of Mzee Kawato, who first gained attention while accompanying his son before his energetic stage dances and signature “Ine waaa wawawa” moves eventually made him a celebrity in his own right.

She further pointed to Charles wa Asiya, whose broken English and “Kinankole kiki?” phrase spread rapidly across social media and turned into a widely repeated catchphrase.

The group popularly known as “Abaana b’Ekasese” also made the list after transforming “Tuli gumite” into the viral “Muli wumite” trend that dominated social media conversations for a period.

Hellen additionally reflected on the famous “Muwunya Dancers,” explaining that the group originally had a different identity before veteran playwright Alex Mukulu made a comment during Yolesa Ekitone that permanently rebranded them in the eyes of the public.

Her final example was a young woman who unexpectedly became a viral sensation after appearing in the “Hozambe” music video, where a brief dance moment quickly caught the attention of social media users and turned into a widely copied trend.

For Hellen Menta, the stories continue showing how Uganda’s internet culture can transform completely ordinary moments into instant fame without warning.
