Horror on the Kampala-Gulu Highway: 46 Dead in Tragic Crash

A dark shadow hangs over Uganda after a horrific road crash at Kitaleeba village left 46 people dead and dozens more fighting for their lives.

Eyewitnesses say the tragedy unfolded on Wednesday morning when a passenger bus smashed head on into a truck, leaving many passengers trapped inside the wrecked vehicles.

Rescue teams, including police and local residents, worked through the night to pull victims to safety and rush survivors to nearby hospitals.

Police have launched an investigation, with early reports pointing to over speeding and brake failure as possible causes of the collision.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni spoke out on X, sending his condolences to grieving families.

He also promised government support: UGX 5 million for families who lost loved ones and UGX 1 million for those injured.

I send my deepest condolences to the families that have lost their loved ones in the tragic accident along the Kampala Gulu highway. May their souls rest in peace. Government will support each bereaved family with 5 million shillings and 1 million to those who are injured.

The Ministry of Health has called on Ugandans to donate blood to help victims in hospitals, while road safety authorities are warning motorists to follow traffic rules and keep their vehicles in good condition.

As the nation reels, Kitaleeba village is plunged into grief, with families and friends gathering to identify loved ones and come to terms with the scale of the disaster.
