How Janice Turned Family Skepticism into Support for Her Influencing Career

Ugandan brand influencer and content creator Janice Kemigisha is one of the rising stars in the country’s social media scene, but her path to success was not without hurdles.

During a sit down with XFM, she revealed that convincing her parents to support her career in influencing was a challenge at the start.

She explained that her parents initially had reservations about her venturing into social media, especially at a young age.

At first, it was not easy because, of course, they had their own perceptions about the industry, social media, and about someone being exposed at a very young age.

Janice’s approach was simple but effective: continue with her education, uphold her values, and pursue her passion responsibly.

Over time, her parents began to understand her vision and gradually became her biggest supporters.

I feel like I gave them a reason to believe in me. I still went on with school. I still stuck to my principles and values, but then again doing something that I am truly passionate about. And they slowly started supporting me, and they saw what I was seeing, finally.

Janice shared that the influence she has had on her family goes beyond support.

Her mother, who was initially skeptical about social media, has now joined TikTok just to watch her content.

My mom does not even watch TikTok alot but she downloaded the app just to keep watching my videos.

Coming from a strict and disciplined family meant that in her early days, curfews and restrictions made it difficult to balance school, work, and client deadlines.

Now, she attributes all that she has accomplished in influencing to the approval and backing of her parents.

I would not have gotten this far without their permission because like I said I come from a very strict and decent family. In the earlier days I had curfew, but then I was not even able to shoot or even get done with my work or with the client’s work in time If it was not with their support, them letting me go out, them letting me be able to do all these sorts of things.
