“I Am a Global Artiste” — Karole Kasita Breaks the ‘Local Artiste’ Mold

The battle over the global relevance of Ugandan music is still heating up.

For months now, critics have been quick to brand most Ugandan artistes as “local,” claiming their music does not travel beyond the country’s borders.

Apart from the likes of BET Award winner Eddy Kenzo and fast-rising Joshua Baraka, many have been shoved into the “local-only” box.

But Karole Kasita is not staying silent.

The “Yaka” singer clapped back during a recent appearance on Evening Rush Reloaded, and she made her point loud and clear.

By the way, I am a global artiste. The problem is that those who criticize us do not actually check our music or performances. They speak without knowing where my music is being played.

She went on to reveal that her reach goes far beyond what many assume.

Performance-wise, my music actually gets more play outside Uganda than it does here.

Kasita’s words echo the frustrations of many Ugandan musicians who feel unfairly labeled and overlooked.

With streaming platforms opening up new audiences and bookings outside Uganda on the rise, could the “local” narrative be due for a serious rethink?
