I Had the Passion, Not the Talent: Sherry Matovu on Why She Quit Music

Sherry Matovu has shared the reasons behind her decision to step away from the music industry, revealing her journey of self-discovery and changing priorities.

Although she initially gained recognition through her music, Sherry admits that she eventually realized her true calling lay elsewhere.

In a recent media interview, Sherry explained that while she had a deep passion and love for music, she did not possess the natural talent for singing.

“I had the passion and love, but not the talent,” she said.

Recognizing this, she made the difficult decision to step aside from pursuing a singing career, choosing instead to support those who truly had the talent for music.

The decision was not easy, especially given the investments she had made in her music career.

Sherry revealed that music was consuming a significant amount of her finances, with limited returns in terms of earnings.

Although she had bookings for shows, the financial strain led her to reassess her priorities.

The turning point came after Sherry became a mother. With children to care for, she realized the money she had been spending on her music career could be better used to provide for her family.

“When I gave birth, I had to check my priorities. The money that could be taking care of my children, I was spending it on music,” she explained.

Despite stepping away from the music scene, Sherry has no regrets about her time in the industry.

She acknowledges that her music career shaped her into the person she is today and opened doors for other opportunities.

“People got to know me through music, and that recognition has been beneficial to my other endeavors,” she shared.

Sherry also spoke about the role her appearance played in her career.

“Most bookings I got were because of my stunning beauty. People wanted to see me perform,” she said.

Recognizing the importance of self-care, Sherry now encourages women, especially musicians, to take care of themselves and their appearance.

“Some people will book you just because they want to see you live,” she added.
