Jackie Chandiru Warns Musicians: “Politics Will Cost You Your Fans”
In Uganda, the worlds of music and politics are increasingly colliding.
More and more musicians are stepping into the political arena, openly declaring the parties they support or actively taking sides.
While some see this as a chance to influence change or boost their profile, not everyone thinks it is a smart move.
Veteran singer Jackie Chandiru warns that mixing politics with music can be risky.
She points out that when artistes publicly pick a political side, they risk alienating a portion of their fanbase.
For her, the focus should remain on music, performing, entertaining, and connecting with audiences without letting politics get in the way.
Musicians who have decided to take sides, it is not right. You are supposed to separate music from politics. If you have decided to declare a side, you have to understand that it cuts out a certain percentage of your fanbase. As an artiste, stick to your profession as a musician. Sing here, sing there. They pay you, you perform, and then move on.
The trend has sparked debates among fans and industry insiders alike.
While some say artistes should express their political views, others warn that picking sides could hurt their careers.
With politics creeping in, the real question is: where should Ugandas artistes draw the line?
