Johnny Drille Explains Why He Refused to Change His Sound for Record Deals

Sensational singer John Ighodaro, popularly known as Johnny Drille, has revealed the challenges he faced in landing a recording deal because of his unique musical style.

He explained that two major labels were interested in signing him but wanted him to change his sound to make it faster and more danceable.

Johnny chose to stay true to his artistry instead.

The ‘Wait For Me’ crooner credited Mavin Records CEO Don Jazzy for taking a bold risk by signing him.

Unlike other labels, Don Jazzy signed him out of genuine appreciation for his music rather than profit.

This move surprised many in the industry but ultimately paid off.

Johnny Drille first gained recognition during the sixth season of Project Fame West Africa in 2013.

He released his debut single ‘Wait For Me’ in 2015 and joined Mavin Records in 2017. His debut album,

‘Before We Fall Asleep,’ established him as one of Nigeria’s most soulful alternative artistes.
