Kamenyo Calls Out Older Artistes, ‘Some Things Do Not Suit You Anymore’
As musicians grow older, staying relevant in the industry becomes increasingly difficult.
Some try to keep up with trends, hoping to connect with a younger audience.
But according to Ugandan rapper Victor Kamenyo, there comes a point when an artiste should step back and accept the natural process of change.
While speaking to YouTuber Saymore Official, Kamenyo began by offering advice to young artistes.
He urged them to start thinking about life after music early on, warning that fame does not last forever.
People have to accept that they age, and there is nothing they can do about it. Those who are still in their youth should start preparing for retirement early.
Kamenyo explained that as artistes age, the public’s reception of their music begins to shift, even if the quality remains high.
There comes a time when an artiste is well-established and their music is good, but the audience does not receive it the same way they receive the music of a new, younger artistes.
He also emphasized that age brings limitations, not just physically, but in terms of perception and public expectation.
Using a hypothetical comparison between Kapeke and Bebe Cool, Kamenyo illustrated how certain things that work for younger artistes may no longer suit older ones.
For example, ‘Kaba’ by Kapeke is a very good song for Kapeke, but it would not suit an artiste like Bebe Cool.
According to Kamenyo, age naturally alters what feels appropriate or believable for an artiste to do, no matter how talented they are.
Age naturally takes certain things from us. There are limits that come with getting older. It is painful because everyone experiences it. In one way or another, growth affects all people.
He concluded with a message of acceptance, urging artistes not to resist the changes that come with age.
We just have to embrace and accept growth, and also accept that with that growth, there are certain things we can no longer do and must leave behind.
