Koffi Olomidé in Uganda for Afrigo@50, Sparks Debate Over Butler Snub
Legendary Congolese crooner Koffi Olomidé has landed in Uganda for the much-hyped Afrigo@50 concert and is already at the center of a storm after a viral video showed him snubbing a male butler at his Kampala hotel.
The clip, now making the rounds on social media, shows the Rumba star checking into Sheraton Kampala Hotel, where a male butler, reportedly named Domenciano, was introduced to attend to him.
But Koffi was having none of it.
Speaking in French, he made his preference clear, saying, “I want a lady… I prefer a lady,” before turning away and effectively rejecting the male attendant on the spot.
The move has split fans down the middle.
Some accuse the singer of promoting outdated gender stereotypes and disrespecting hardworking staff, while others say he is a VIP guest entitled to his personal preferences, whether cultural or otherwise.
“There is a difference between making a request and demeaning someone. The tone matters,” one fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Neither Sheraton Kampala Hotel nor Koffi’s camp has commented publicly, leaving the court of public opinion to rage on.
Meanwhile, Koffi is still set to take center stage at the Legends of Sound Afrigo@50 show on Saturday, August 16, at Lugogo Cricket Oval, a golden celebration of Afrigo Band’s 50 years in music.
He arrived in the country earlier this week to a warm airport welcome from Afrigo frontman Moses Matovu and Talent Africa Group CEO Aly Allibhai, who hailed him as “a giant in African music” whose presence adds “weight to Afrigo’s legacy.”
With smash hits like “Loi,” “Papa Ngwasuma,” and “Selfie” under his belt, Koffi remains a towering figure in African music, but his career has never been without drama.
From past legal troubles to fiery on stage moments, controversy seems to follow him as closely as his fanbase does.
Now, as Uganda counts down to the historic concert, one question lingers: will the butler snub leave a stain on his visit, or will the music drown out the noise?
