Magic Touch Dismisses Claims DJs Snub Local Music, Says the Crowd Decides
Ugandan DJ Magic Touch has jumped into the debate after singer-songwriter Dokta Brain accused DJs of favoring foreign music over local hits.
Speaking to Rewind, Magic Touch pushed back, saying DJs do not just pick songs randomly.
According to him, the crowd calls the shots because they are the ones DJs answer to.
Still, he stressed that Ugandan music is never left out, adding that local songs always make it into their sets.
I do not agree with that because, as DJs, the people are our bosses. In most cases, what they like the most is what we play. But sometimes some DJs also force local music on them. However, there are some DJs who do not play Ugandan music.
Magic Touch explained that music choices often depend on the venue and the type of crowd present.
He suggested that Dokta Brain may simply be frequenting places where the audience’s music preferences differ from his.
Most times, it also depends on the place or venue. We have different crowds with different music preferences. We have people who like foreign music, and we also have people who consume Ugandan music. So maybe he is always in places with people who do not like what he likes.
Magic Touch added that Ugandan music is now part of the mix everywhere, regardless of the crowd or the location.
These days, people like Ugandan music. We actually play it in every bar. It no longer matters whether it is uptown or not. Ugandan music is also played in uptown spots.
