Maurice Kirya Reveals Why He Nearly Quit Music in 2020

Ugandan singer, songwriter, actor, and entrepreneur Maurice Kirya has opened up about a difficult period in his life when he nearly walked away from music.

In a sit down with content creator Kaka Singh, Kirya opened up about how tough the Covid 19 pandemic was for him.

He revealed it pushed him so far that he even announced his retirement in 2020.

In 2020, just like everyone else in the world, I struggled with the pandemic, and I announced to the people that I was retiring from music.

However, the celebrated musician explained that what happened after that decision changed everything.

He said he took time off and started listening to his own music in a different way, not as the artiste, but as a listener.

He described the experience as emotional, saying every song reminded him of a deeper place where his creativity comes from, bringing back both happy and painful memories.

I remember going through a rollercoaster of emotions good and bad because every song comes from somewhere. There is a deeper place that I am creating from. I remember being happy, and then I remember being very sad and feeling very inspired. And I realised that was my voice I was listening to. It was like I was talking to myself.

It was in that moment that Kirya realised he still had a purpose and that his voice mattered to the people who connect with his music.

That was when I realised the importance of getting back up, getting back to the people, and serving the people through my music. If I ever needed inspiration to sing again, that was the moment.Realising who I was, what I was, and what I was giving to the people. It makes a difference in people’s lives.

The “Misubbaawa” hitmaker stressed that he wants his name to stand for giving, not taking.

He added that he hopes his music and presence will touch lives and leave a positive impact.

I hope that whoever has listened to my music or interacted with me, both as an artiste and as a man, I hope that I am not taking away but giving. I hope that through every melody, everything I wrote, and my presence, I hope that I leave the world a better place than I found it. And if music can help me do that, then I guess that is how I hope to be remembered
