Mesach Semakula Urges Artistes to Focus on Creating Good Music, Not Hits

Veteran Ugandan musician Mesach Semakula has advised upcoming and established artistes to prioritize creating good music over chasing quick hit songs.

Speaking to YouTuber Kaiyz about the difference between the two, Semakula explained that hit songs are easy to make, while good songs are harder to create and have a lasting impact that can grow over time.

If I want a hit song, I can write it. I just put two heavy words together, release it tomorrow, and everyone will be talking about it. A hit is very easy to make. But a good song is hard to make. You have to put in the time, craft it properly.

Using his own song “Muzibeewo” as an example, Semakula highlighted how some tracks take years to gain recognition.

Muzibeewo is a song that is surprising me. I think I made it in 2010. I recorded it, shot a video, and released it, but it did not perform as I expected. Even during shows, I would skip it because I was not feeling it. Then, about three years ago, it started gaining traction. Now, if I do not perform it, fans complain.

He concluded by encouraging artistes to focus on quality music, noting that even if a song does not blow up immediately, it will definitely find its audience in time.
