Musical Battles Require More Than Hits, Frank Ntambi Tells Mun*G

Ugandan performing arts critic Frank Ntambi is throwing shade at Mun*G’s bold claim that no one in the industry can match his catalog in a Verzuz battle.

In a fiery yet respectful online post, Ntambi reminded the Lugaflow rapper that winning a showdown is about more than just having the “most hits.”

No disrespect to my brother Mun G but many artistes would cut his throat in case of a battle koz’ for me the outcome of a musical battle is not always about who has “most” hits but rather who resonates more with the audience and performs strategically.

Ntambi pointed to past battles as proof, highlighting Bebe Cool’s win over Goodlife despite having fewer hits.

He argued that timeless, cross-generational tracks from legends like Madoxx or Afrigo Band hit harder, and questioned whether Mun*G has any songs like that in his catalog.

Can your catalog spark nostalgia and sway the audience emotionally like Jamal, Iryn, Juliana, or Mesearch Ssemakula’s?

The critic also warned that versatility is key.

Mun*G’s sound, he says, leans heavily in one direction, whereas artistes like King Saha and Bobi Wine can move seamlessly from club bangers to socially conscious tracks, giving them an edge.

He even hinted that performers such as Pallaso could steal the show in a live set.

When it comes to strategy, Ntambi praised GNL Zamba’s skill in pacing his performances, a tactic he believes could outshine Mun*G’s bangers.

I have seen the likes of GNL Zamba perform, and not just fronting just hits, yet he has a lot of them, but with what we call ‘strategic pacing.’ Zamba can win you over by pacing his setlist effectively, starting strong with songs from his first album, Koi Koi Riddles of Life, building momentum with his fourth album, Spear, and fifth album, Homecoming, and saving his biggest hits from his second album, Speaking Varnacular, for key moments to outshine your selections.

Despite his opinion, he made it clear in the end that he has no beef with the ‘Virgin’ hitmaker.

I love and respect you so much, my brother, and cannot wait for 30th August at Serena. I will be there.
