“Musicians May Not Understand It, But They Need It” — Fik Fameica on Copyright Law
Fik Fameica is sounding the alarm about the urgent need for a functional copyright law in Uganda.
While many musicians might not fully understand how it works, he says this protection is something they need now more than ever.
In a chat with Ruth Kalibbala, the rapper stressed that copyright is key to opening up new ways for musicians to earn money.
He pointed out that under the current system, creatives rarely make money unless they are performing live.
Right now, a Ugandan artiste only makes money when they are on the microphone. That is why I am organizing a concert, because, at the moment, it is the only way to earn from music.
Fik also highlighted that copyright rules are barely enforced, which means many artistes miss out on fair compensation even though their music is played all over the country.
Music is being used everywhere in the country for free. If we had a proper copyright law, artistes would earn money every time their songs are played, whether on the airwaves or in public spaces.
He wrapped up by calling on fellow musicians and creatives to unite in pushing for a solid copyright law that works for Uganda’s artistes.
